STORIES - Clarity, One of the 4C's

When buying a diamond, it's essential to consider the 4 Cs, one of which is clarity. Clarity plays a key role in determining how valuable and rare a diamond is.

It’s not just clarity that affects the price, carat weight, color, and cut also influence a diamond's value.

Clarity refers to the presence (or absence) of inclusions and blemishes in a gemstone:

  • Inclusions: Tiny natural imperfections within the stone, such as traces of minerals or microscopic fractures.

  • Blemishes: Surface flaws, like scratches or small pits on the outside of the stone.

These characteristics are formed during the diamond’s natural growth over millions of years, making each stone unique. However, the less visible they are, the higher the clarity grade and the rarer (and more valuable) the diamond.

The Official Clarity Scale (GIA)

The most widely used grading system comes from the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and ranges from FL (Flawless) to I (Included). Here's the full scale:

  • FL (Flawless)
No internal or external flaws, even under 10x magnification. Extremely rare, less than 1% of all diamonds.

  • IF (Internally Flawless)
No internal inclusions; only minor surface blemishes.

  • VVS1 & VVS2 (Very Very Slightly Included)
Minute inclusions, very difficult to detect even under magnification.

  • VS1 & VS2 (Very Slightly Included)
Small inclusions, slightly easier to see at 10x magnification.

  • SI1 & SI2 (Slightly Included)
Inclusions are visible under magnification, and possibly to the naked eye.

  • I1, I2, I3 (Included)
Inclusions are clearly visible and may affect brilliance.
