STORIES - Determining Your Ring Size

Whether you're choosing an engagement ring, ordering a ring online, or want to surprise someone with the right size: getting your ring size right is essential. A ring that's slightly too small or too big never feels comfortable. Luckily, you can measure your size easily and reliably at home. At BY JACKY®, we explain the best way to do it.

Why the right ring size matters so much

A ring that doesn't fit well either slides off your finger or pinches uncomfortably. Both situations aren't just unpleasant, over time they can also cause discomfort or even damage. On top of that, measuring beforehand is far more pleasant than having it resized afterwards, although most jewellers, including BY JACKY®, are happy to offer that service if needed.

Method 1: measure a ring you already own

The easiest way is to measure a ring that already fits well, on the finger you're ordering the new ring for. Place a ruler across the inner diameter of the ring and measure the distance from one inner edge to the other, in millimetres. Compare this diameter to a ring size chart to determine your size.

Keep in mind: this works best with a ring you actually wear on that specific finger, since each finger can be a different size.

Method 2: measure your finger with paper or string

Don't have a ring that fits well? Take a thin strip of paper or a piece of non-stretchy string and wrap it around the base of your finger, exactly where the ring will sit. Mark where the paper or string overlaps, then measure that length with a ruler. You can then compare this circumference in millimetres to a ring size chart to find your size.

For the most accurate result:

Measure at the end of the day, when your fingers are at their most swollen (fingers tend to be slightly thinner in the morning).

Measure at a normal, comfortable temperature, cold fingers are thinner than warm ones.

Measure your finger a few times and take the average for the most reliable result.

Method 3: use a ring sizer set

For the most precise result, you can use a physical ring sizer set: a set of plastic or metal rings in various sizes that you simply try on, just like trying on a ring in-store. Many jewellers offer these sets, or you can easily order one online to use at home.

Take the width of the ring into account

One detail that's often overlooked: wider rings tend to feel tighter than narrow rings, even at the same size. Going for a wide band or a statement ring? Plan for half a size larger than your standard size, for optimal comfort.

Still unsure? Go slightly bigger rather than smaller

If you're caught between two sizes or aren't entirely sure, choose the slightly larger size. Sizing a ring up is, with most jewellers, easier and cheaper than sizing it down, especially for rings with an inlaid stone or detailing.
