STORIES - How to Tell Real Gemstones from Imitations

 

A gemstone can catch the light in a way that feels almost impossible to replicate and yet, imitations have been around for centuries. From glass to synthetic stones, the market is full of look-alikes that can be difficult to distinguish from the real thing at first glance. In this blog, we explain the difference and share a few signs to look out for.

Three categories, not two

When people talk about "fake" gemstones, they're usually referring to three quite different things:

  • Natural gemstones — formed by geological processes in the earth over thousands to millions of years
  • Synthetic gemstones — created in a laboratory, with the same chemical composition and crystal structure as their natural counterpart. A synthetic ruby, for example, is still genuinely a ruby.
  • Imitations — materials made to resemble a gemstone visually, but with a completely different chemical composition, such as glass, plastic or a different, less valuable mineral

This distinction matters. A synthetic stone is not automatically an imitation, it's a real gemstone, just grown by humans rather than the earth. An imitation, on the other hand, only mimics the appearance.

Signs that can indicate an imitation

Telling stones apart with certainty requires proper equipment and training, but a few characteristics can already raise a flag:

Bubbles and flow lines Glass imitations often contain tiny air bubbles or swirl marks inside the stone, visible under magnification. Natural gemstones instead tend to show their own type of inclusions, small mineral crystals or fine internal lines, which are actually a sign of authenticity rather than a flaw.

Too perfect, too uniform Natural gemstones almost always have minor imperfections. A stone that looks flawless to the naked eye across a large size is worth examining more closely, this is more common in glass or synthetic material than in nature.

Temperature Most genuine gemstones feel cool to the touch and warm up slowly, because they conduct heat well. Glass and plastic imitations tend to warm up faster in your hand.

Weight Gemstones vary in density. A stone that feels unusually light for its size compared to what's expected can be a sign it isn't what it claims to be.

Scratch resistance Genuine gemstones, especially harder ones like sapphire or ruby, resist scratching. Glass imitations scratch far more easily.

None of these tests are conclusive on their own, professional gemmological testing is the only reliable way to confirm a stone's identity.

Certification is the real answer

The most trustworthy way to know exactly what you're buying is a certificate from a recognised gemmological laboratory, such as GIA, IGI or GGTL. This document confirms whether a stone is natural or synthetic, states its exact characteristics, and (for diamonds and many coloured gemstones) is tied to the specific stone through detailed measurements.

When buying loose stones or fine jewellery featuring a gemstone, it's worth asking whether a certificate is included, and from which laboratory. This gives you certainty that goes beyond what the eye alone can tell you.

Why it matters

Knowing what you're wearing isn't just about value. It shapes how you care for a piece, what you can expect from it over time, and the story you're able to tell about it. Whether a stone is natural, synthetic or an intentional imitation isn't inherently good or bad, it simply needs to be clear, so the choice is genuinely yours.
